As a practicum student with Andrea, I have learned an immense amount about working with teens in a Transitions Plus Program. One intervention I was a bit nervous about but ended up going over extremely well was a song writing activity I did to the song “I Love the Mountains”. Begin with handing out egg shakers for the clients to play along with throughout the intervention, and putting the words to the song up on the board in case anyone is unfamiliar with it.
Sing the song through a few times with the group so everyone is familiar with the melody (found here).
I love the flowers
I love the daffodils
I love the mountains
I love the rolling hills
I love the fireside
When all the lights are low
Boom de ah dah, Boom dee ah dah, Boom dee ah dah, Boom de ah dah
Next, pull up the words to the song with blanks:
I love _____________
I love _____________
I love _____________
I love _____________
I love the whole world.
And all its sights and sounds.
Boom de ah dah, Boom dee ah dah, Boom dee ah dah, Boom de ah dah
Prompt your clients to fill in the blanks with things they love about spring. If they need a little extra help thinking of things, putting up visuals of options is very effective. You can add as many verses as you wish with the Boom dee ah dah chorus between them. Our group had a ton of fun with this activity, and we hope you do too!
