March at Toneworks is self-care month! Sometimes the concept of self-care is just a little elusive to me. When life is so hectic and free time is minimal, what kind of self-care regimen do I even have time for? Where do I start? I have compiled a list of nine self-care practices you and I can achieve right now (or the next time we have a minute or two to spare). The items on this list, taken individually, are not life-changing by any means, but making a habit out of healthy choices can indeed make a meaningful difference in the long run.
- Take two minutes for a mini-meditation. Spend one minute being aware of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations, and spend one second minute focused on breathing.
- My Fitbit tracker lets me set little silent alarms for myself throughout the day which remind me to take a moment for some deep breathing. You can also do this on your phone or set an alert so a notification pops on your computer screen.
- Start a compliments file in your email inbox. Save the kind things people say about you to read later. Whether the message is a word of praise from your boss, a kind note friend, or a thank-you from someone you did a favor for, reading through these notes will brighten a gloomy day
- Go through your social media feeds (yes, all of them!), and either un-friend or turn off notifications from any people who add unwanted negativity or anxiety to your life.
- Do something that energizes your body. Stretch, swim, run, do yoga, go for a walk with your kids, or do whatever physical activity makes you feel good. You don’t have to hit the gym for an hour a day just to feel good.
- Create a gratitude list. Write down ten things that you’re thankful for. If any of
your bullet points is a person, let them know they’re on your list. All it takes is a text message!
- Unplug for a day. Or an hour. Turn off any unnecessary electronic devices.
- Be still. If you’re like many people, you may not have an entire day to devote to just resting and rejuvenating. So, take 1o minutes.
- Make a To-do list. Notice how many things you put on your plate in a given day. Is every item completely necessary?
- Understand that it may feel selfish to practice self-care when your time could be spent caring for those you love or helping others. BUT, remember that self-care is non-negotiable and know that you cannot be there for others without being there for yourself first.
