Hello Toneworks friends! It’s Amber and I’m excited to share with you some of our favorite back-to-school books from 2019 that we hope you and your child love too!
The Pigeon HAS to Go to School by Mo Willems
The Pigeon has LOTS of questions about this whole school thing. Why does it have to start in the morning? The Pigeon is NOT the best in the morning. What’s up with all these numbers and letters they teach you at school? What if they teach you too much and your head explodes! There are a lot of questions that the Pigeon and your child may have about school. This book addresses some of these concerns with colorful drawings and relatable content for any kiddo that is about the start school. Hopefully by the end of the story, YOUR child realizes what the Pigeon realizes, but you’ll have to read to find out what that is exactly!
The King of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes and illustrations by Vanessa Brantley-Newton
Here ye, here ye! The royal kingdom of Kindergarten declares that your child feel like royalty during their first day of school! The story invites your child to use their imagination just like the main character who uses his imagination to feel like a king during a morning routine for school. In the book, the sun shines bright like a crown, the royal feast consists of pancakes, and the long, yellow carriage whisks you off to school!
So Big! by Mike Wohnoutka
Bear is a bear and even though he is just starting his first day of school he is already so big! He feels so big that nothing makes him nervous! Well, almost nothing. First day of school jitters can make the biggest kids feel nervous. This book shows your child how Bear finds his confidence and may help your child gain that confidence too if they don’t feel so big at times. The cute drawings and easy reading text can help even the littlest reader through these important life events!
Butterflies on the First Day of School by Annie Silvestro and illustrations by Dream Chen
The days leading up to Rosie’s first day of school seems like the best days ever! She is excited to use her new backpack and she even practiced raising her hand! However, that night before school fills Rosie with something besides excitement and joy: it fills her with butterflies. Rosie is so nervous to get on that school bus filled with strangers, but once she finally relaxes the strangest thing happens. This book takes the metaphor of having “butterflies in our stomachs” to a new, visual level for children.
If I Built a School by Chris Van Dusen
This BRAND NEW story is another one of Van Dusen’s “If I Built…” books. Each books allows young Jack to use his active imagination to create amazing features in ordinary objects. This time, Jack is about to give his dream school the works! The cafeteria will leave you drooling, the library will leave you wanting to read, and the playground will make any kid want to run around! This book can inspire your child to think of their dream school features. Just make sure they aren’t too disappointed when they return to their real schools 😉
